The natives were restless
As they peered through the trees
The shipwreck brought strangers
On a misty, salt-filled breeze.
They sat upon the shoreline
Amongst the jagged rocks
Four men and three women
Watching seagulls flock.
Gilligan and The Skipper
Pretty Ginger and Mary Ann
The Howells and Professor
Rounded out the clan.
I watched each and every week
To see if they'd go on home
Never looked like it would happen
Their fate was so unknown.
Glue that simply would not stick
And hammocks falling down
Cannibals and big spiders
Kept 'em running 'round.
I had loved that classic show
Had mentioned it a time or two
But soon discovered I was old
When my son asked, "Gilligan who?"
Forgive me for blaspheming Melissa but I never saw one episode of Gilligan's Island - and it has nothing to do with my age lol (we only had a choice of four TV stations up until the late 1980s lol) but I'm imagining it was as ubiquitous the other numerous cereal/serials that we got here in Ireland.
Dodgy glue and hammocks - sounds as funny as my beloved (original) Star Trek with its polystyrene rocks. But still - beloved... lol

Gilligan's Island was, to me, one of those fun but silly little shows that youngsters today would probably roll their eyes at today. It took them years and years to get off that island. Some of the props and costumes were laughable but, as in my title it was a classic!
I'm not familiar with this TV show you're talking about, but that's not a problem, I guess xd
Anyways, as always, your rhyming skills have impressed me. It's still so enjoyable to read your poetry. Your poems are like songs :)
Great piece, Melissa, and keep writing! :)

The Skipper and Gilligan took some people on a three-hour tour on their boat -- a movie star, a professor, a rich couple and a farm girl. The boat wrecked and they had a heck of a time getting off that island. Their antics, running into cannibals and wild creatures was quite comical.
I do understand this poem.

I loved the old shows. Good old fashion family and humor. My kids watched them with me. Thank you Melissa for sharing the excellent poetry.

I think you captured well the essence of this, one of my most favorite sixties TV shows. When it began, I was already a fan of Bob Denver, having known him as the beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on the Dobey Gillis show. Yeah, I'm that old.

Isn't it amazing that as kids, we would always hope for their return, but now you realise that it would mean the end of the show. Then where would we be? an hour of Steve Austin doing a crossword, wonder woman knitting and starsky and Hutch playing table tennis because they had caught all the bad guys.
They wee all classics for a reason. Thanks for the wander down memory lane.
