Super Hero

Super Hero

A Story by MelissaAndres
"

Story of a mother and daughter who have a fun, super secret in an ordinary world.

"

"Thanks, Mom," Macey grinned.  "You're super!"

Opal Morton wrapped up the last of the three dozen homemade Snicker-doodles her daughter hadn't told her she needed for the third-grade celebration until bedtime the night before.

"No problem," Opal replied as she handed Macey the overloaded tray and grabbed their coats.  "We'd better hurry or we'll be late."

Macey giggled.  "Oh, Mom, you always say that but we always get everywhere on time."

"That's because I'm Super Mom, remember?"

Mother and daughter laughed and scooted out the door.

"Here's our room mother now," Macey's teacher, Mrs. O'Riley sighed.  "Opal, I am so terribly sorry but the other Mom who was supposed to come help had a family emergency.  I've been called to the principal's office to address a bullying issue so I can't stay.  You can handle this, right?"

Before Opal could reply, Mrs. O'Riley was halfway down the hall.

The children settled in their seats as they were given a Snicker-doodle and paper cups of orange Kool-Aid.

"This is lame," a little boy with dark hair and freckles hollered.

Everyone nodded and murmured in agreement.

Macey hung her head, trying to hide her shame and embarrassment.

Thinking quickly, Opal looked around the classroom.  She opened her shoulder bag and removed her laptop and a pair of knitting needles.  Moving to the windows along the far wall, she began poking holes in the thin, pull-down shades.

"What in the world are you doing?" a little curly red-headed girl asked in horror.

Opal continued her task as Macey slunk down lower and lower in her seat.

Stepping to the chalkboard, Opal then pulled down the white screen used to watch history documentaries and films.  Tapping a few keys on her laptop, a music video was instantly projected onto the wide screen.  Music filled the air.

Opal raised her voice.  "Let's move our desks back against the walls, guys."

Several boys and girls looked about in confusion.  Some started to grin.  Macey looked up; hesitation filling her slight body.

"Mom, please ..."

"Macey, will you get the lights?"

Trudging to the switch, Macey plunged the classroom into darkness.  Within seconds, the pinpoint holes in the pull-down shades bounced rays of sunlight off the walls.  The third-grade students were mesmerized.

"Let's dance!" Opal yelled as she crawled onto the teacher's desk.

Dancing and laughter produced a thrilling and raucous party.  They had never had so much fun.

"Your Mom is absolutely super, Macey!"  More than one child had expressed the same sentiment.

Looking atop Mrs. O'Riley's desk, Macey's heart swelled with pride as her mother kicked up her legs and sneakily tucked the hem of a bright red cape back into her slacks.

"Yes, she is," Macey beamed.  "Yes, she is."
