Free Falling

Free Falling

A Poem by Melissa Kester

I am standing at the edge of a cliff
With the graceful wind at my back
She sings me a song of glory
And keeps my balance on track
For the vast expanse before me
A plunge to my surest death
I wonder what waits down below
But I must wait with baited breath
It is not yet my time to fall
Although I truly wish to leap
But once I make this dive
My soul is theirs to keep
And so I stand here on this ledge
Doubting my time will come
Waiting for some fantasy
Knowing there will be none
But when the sun begins to set
Surely I can feel a heat
A presence here beside me
A stranger I would meet
He tenderly takes my hand
Slowly raises it to his lips
And pressed against so sweetly
A gentle, loving kiss
I see questions in his eyes
He waits for this, like me
But how can I be certain
That I'm meant to fall so free
He turns to face me fully
And whispers words of fate
"I hear you'll fall forever
If you jump off with your mate"
I stare into his eyes
And ask him how he can be sure
For I have made this leap before
And found agony on the floor
He shrugs his shoulders lightly
As if it's no big deal at all
He takes my hand and asks me
"Would you like to make this fall?"
And after a moment's hesitation
I place my hand in his
As one we step off this balcony
And plummet into the mist
And as we are falling down
I am waiting for the pain
But as I reach the nearing ground
I'll enjoy the kiss of rain
I did not fall as fast before
Nor did it take this long
It is now that I begin to wonder
If at first I had been wrong
And as this thought caresses me
I feel my back begin to shift
An explosion of light around us
Reveals our glorious gifts
I can hardly believe my eyes
When I look over to my mate
His wings have come with strength
And in this, it seals our fate
I was indeed wrong before
For we now have matching wings
We spread them wide and soar up high
Where the glorious wind still sings
Now hand in hand, wing by wing,
And side by side we soar
I finally understand it now
Free Falling forever more
And now I laugh, I'm free at last
As we sail into the sun
Eternity is a peaceful place
Now that I've found the one

This is a beautiful analogy. Falling.... in love. At first I'm thinking tragedy.... The pace is just right as you spin the tale. Rhyming is re enforcing yet unforced. Climax is ecstacy. I enjoyed this.
