Methods of Exposition: Clasification : Women and ShoesA Story by Hebe AdrasteiaIf the shoe fits.....We Are Shoes Petite, blonde and stylishly dressed, the girl stops. Around her, the crowds restlessly bubble. Her arms are jostled, and her toes squelched down. The girl doesn't care. The paramount of perfection glitters before her in all its gum pink majesty. Unable to resist those 6 inch heels, she dreamily floats inside the shoe store. To many women, shoes represent the object of many fantasies. One article said that women think about shoes (and shopping) just as often as men think about sex. But what if our obsession has a deeper root? I believe that women are like shoes. Each one has a distinct personality, and no matter what shoes she wears, she'll always find herself coming back to one kind that fits her best. As they say, "If the shoe fits, wear it." The first kind of woman is the trendy, pointed toed high heel. This woman is bold, aware of the aura of her manicured smile. She likes to take risks, skydive and, perhaps, have the occasional high paced car chase to escape her mob of slavering admirers. If ever caught, there is no fear. Her trademark heels can double as a lethal weapon. On the other end of the spectrum lies the loafer lady. She is most likely to be a teacher, or the fortunate mother of five frenzied beasts, commonly known as children. Neutrally toned comfort matches everything--- including the coffin of her creativity. A more youthful cousin of the limping loafer is the girl with flats. While still striving for comfortable contact with the earth, she prizes individuality in every checkered, rainbow form. Often she will wrap her hair into a scarf and paint---or she may let it loose to sway barefooted across a thick field. When inspiration descends, she will pick up her pen. There is always a philosophical maze in everything. Skater shoes are females who squish tall in their tight, sandblasted jeans. They may substitute for a tablecloth or talk on the phone upside down, if the mood dictates. Though usually seen in packs, these social butterflies aren't afraid to cocoon into a fluffy blanket by the fire and fall asleep to hot chocolate. Music is their muse and rhythm is their rhyme. Both help the skater shoes grin at life's turbulence. Finally, there are ordinary running shoes. These perspiring whirlwinds take control with a vengeance. Viewing each day as a checklist, their goals rise to surpass even the Eiffel Tower. At night they close their eyes and deify David Beckham and Mia Ham. I am a combination of skater shoes and flats. I cherish my sanity enough to avoid becoming a high heel. Risks rest better in the movies. Most of my pent up energy can find an outlet in some creative pursuit. However, I loathe individuality in isolation. Constant abstract thinking can lead to disconnection, and finally shimmer one into bitter invisibility. Sometimes life just demands to be lived skater shoe style. Things can occasionally be embraced on face value. The beauty of shoes is that they compliment a larger canvas. Regardless of of your shoe style, the important thing is that it fits you. Carl Gustav Jung said, “The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.” Find your style and embrace it. © 2009 Hebe Adrasteia |
