Chapter 9: Holly (Part IV)

I'm going to miss you x
There
is no crime within Alaska it is quite a peaceful country. Everyone is grateful
for what they have got. Many elders live among us and they tell of their
ancestors’ straggles and the days of the apocalypse. I wonder if there is crime
in the rest of the world, if everyone is as grateful as us Alaskans. I smile, I’m
sure they are, I mean who wouldn’t. This place is magical a far greater city
then my own, surely everyone here is very humble about it. I’ve never heard of
a war that has raged between two countries, why should there be? The High
Court of Nations left
in the wake of the apocalypse decided on the land that would be divided for
each city given their contribution to history along with many other things. The
world is stable and the people within it just grateful they are even here at
all. I can see how one can have enemies, it is impossible to please everyone
but then some things just don’t make sense. I speak of a crime free world but
the murder of my parents and my grandparents of unspeakable nature is one I
cannot forget. I can only imagine that the people responsible are barbarians of
Siberia that have breed and raised their young like savage dogs. The Chuckchi
Sea is all that divides us; it lies between the islands of the United Kingdom and
my home. It is full of unknown horror; no one wanted it so it was left
unoccupied. Although over time it became quite clear that we were not alone
that something mutated had evolved on that land. I bet those things killed my
family, who else would? No one is that sick and revolting or even has the evil
potential to commit such a wicked crime. I have to find these creatures, hunt
them down and kill them myself -a life for a life. If they are still lingering
in our world I will find them. They shouldn’t be hard to find.
A huge gate fit for a giant stares
us down. The stranger smiles at my gobsmacked expression. It towers above us
creating a ghastly shadow; from here it looks as if it reaches far up into the
clouds. Why would one build such a wall with a gate this large?
“This is what divides the southern
and northern realms. If you want to get into the southern world you need to get
permission.” The stranger comments. I had so many questions, why would they
stop travellers from coming and going? I’ve heard of great fortresses guarding
ancient cities but that is expected if they are to be restored to exactly as
they once were. The stranger dismounted Lacy and spoke a foreign tongue to a
man who was dressed like a soldier. Why a city would need guards or soldiers
for that matter is above me. If there is no war then there is no need for
soldiers. Am I wrong or naive to think this? The gates open and the stranger
remounts, constantly looking over his shoulder. He slaps Sergeants’ a*s and I
go flying out of the city. Hovering above the saddle reins tight, I glance back
to the stranger -he follows close behind his arms tense as he too hovering
forward over the saddle. Lacy’s legs with such power bolt towards me. I
encourage Sergeant to let go, gallop free. I hold on and race forward. The air
is hot and I look around me, only to just notice that I am no longer on land
but on a bridge made of stone. Could this be the Great Wall? It’s not a wall at
all as it expected -but a bridge. It sure looks like it does in the drawing Nan
has but it doesn’t weave across the peaks of mountains but a straight never
ending bridge across what and can only imagine being the Mediterranean Sea. I
gasp in ore at the fact I am actually here in a matter of weeks I am crossing
into the unknown. We ride until sundown and still the Great Wall continues into
the horizon. It felt like we had only been riding for minutes before the sun
went down but as we stopped, I could see that it was in fact hours as my chest
tightened gasping for oxygen and my poor Sergeant left shaking. I tear runs
down my face, I felt terrible for pushing him so hard. I was just so scared at
what we may be running from. The stranger helps me dismount and we sit our
backs against the edges "I keep my distance. I look into his eyes, our chests
seemed to rise and fall in unison.
