The Ballad of Old Mr. White-HairA Poem by MelanieAnn"Only know you love her when you let her go," --Passenger, "Let her go"
Ah, I remember him;
That old white-haired man with a beer and a whim, A faithful glitter hanging out in his eye. That old man had hair as white as bright clouds, And has a story that gather up the crowds, That goes like this: Seven years old, Tall and quite bold; Daddy was a preacher, Momma was a-good at foldin' laundry, And sold pots and vases she made on her potters' wheel; That young boy had quite a life, even when the others started strife, Like the time he wore them old cleats to basketball practice, Or the time he tried to eat a cactus; Twenty-one years old, Headin' off to school, A college in London, so to speak and people called him a fool. Where the sunny days turned rainy, and his desire to be an English teacher faltered, Where he dropped outta college soon, and his plans were altered inside of London's glamour Forty-six years old, Found a wife beautiful as gold, They bore a son and daughter, who grew up to be a potter like her grandmomma, He was a-happy, a-darin' and a waitin', Then crashes and their tolls That old metal Corvette rolled, took away his children Wishes whisked away, only a wife and a home left. Seventy-nine years old, The man says, "I don't wanna be a-bother, But I think my days are done of bein' a father, For I ain't got no one else at bay My wife went with the good Lord last Monday, And now I sit and drink with a good ol' beer in my hands Watching the blessings of that good old fate, and the crazy people and their mistakes." Oh, I remember that old man, Oil-greased T-shirt with white hair. And now you can see, that life is full of dreams, so his message is the same for you and I-- dreams are special, so please, dear friends, Please, please, please chase after 'em. © 2016 MelanieAnnAuthor's Note
