"Every day is one more inch of a slow play, sinking in"
--Skylar Grey, "Slowly Freaking Out"
Inside that old woman's skin, Leathery and worn, Soft from wrinkles of age, Rests ink the color of an old song's mourn, A black so deep it's like a raven's hair, or wings of crows. The ink stitched with shadows of your past, And constructed of a simple name of hope, of wishes, Of fear, of tears, or memories locked and swimming with the fishes, A name that used to mean so much, And still does, But a name that's gone from her lips, Gone from earth and into light. The good thing, though, is that he'll always be with her, Because tattoos stick around forever, like him.
This is great! My one suggestion is that you don't say directly that you're speaking of a tattoo. The reader gets that from the title, and your imagery at the end would be more powerful if you maintained the non-specificity until the end. I love the build-up in the poem. It gets more and more meaningful as you keep reading. Good job.

I agree with the story in the poetry.

The tattoos of life remind us. We have lived and loved. Thank you Melanie for sharing the excellent poetry.
