Cupids ArrowA Story by Crimson RoseA story based off of the greek myth of Phyche and Cupid. Jasper and Prim find themselves in a unrequented love between a beautiful noble and a serf which ultimately leads to both of there deaths.“He’s so beautiful.” “An angel fallen from heaven.” “A prince,” “Absolutely godly,” Crooned the crowd who secretly admired Jasper as he played in the garden. I ignored them simply walking by with my load of laundry for the day. “Prim!” called Jasper who dropped his toy to rush over and embrace me. I was 14 but that didn’t stop a slow blush from creeping upon my face. “Play with me.” He demanded stubbornly already pulling me towards the masters garden. He was 4 years my junior yet he was drop dead gorgeous with deep blue eyes the color of the most pristine oceans or the clearest skies, hair spun from treads of gold and a strong physique. I shook my head keeping an eye on the increasingly jealous crowd that had gathered. “Who is she,” ‘’Isn’t she a maid?” “Nothing but a mere serf,” “scandalous,” they whispered loud enough for me to hear. “Sorry Jasper but I have to finish my chores. Maybe tomorrow and besides, don’t you have to go to your studies soon?” He fake pouted before saying reluctantly “yes-but,” “-No buts, hurry and go before Miles gives you another ear full.” The last time that had happened Jasper had gotten a good whap on his hand. No matter how handsome he was he was after all still a boy. ”Fine…but promise. Tomorrow, you will play with me?” he said. I smiled afraid of tainting him with lies. Each day as he grew older, more and more people yearned for him and the longer they waited, the more ferocious they became. “Apologize!” a girl commanded when she rudely shoved her oversized breasts into me knocking the garbage out of my hands and soiling her dress. “Sorry,” I mumbled before bending over to organize the mess I made. “What did you say you awful wench.” She exclaimed. “I’m sorry my lady.” I repeated to the point of exasperation. “Filthy vermin,” her heel connected with my hand crushing the bones and peeling flesh as she buried it in. “My mother bought me this dress for 400 Jewels and now you need to clean it.” she said gesturing to the stain on her cheaply made dress. Grabbing the edge of my modest cotton dress I began rubbing in the stain making it worse. “Stop it, I-I-said stop it!” she screamed right into my ear. I didn’t stop, just kept on rubbing the stain watching as her ‘beautiful dress’ turned to ruins. “Help, Help, she’s assaulting me. This w***e is assaulting me. Help. Help!” Guards came running to aid the distressed damsel separating to two of us before restraining me. The girl threw herself into her savior’s arms putting on a dramatic show as she began to bawl. “Ma’am are you ok?” The guard asked. “No! That savage beat me, and look what she did to my dress!” she said practically spitting out the words filling each one with venom. “Is everything ok?” Jasper said cutting in smoothly. He approached us parting the crowd like how Moses parted the red sea. “Jasper,” the girl stuttered out chocking on her words. Jasper surveyed the situation before taking notice of me. “What are you doing to my servant? Release her at once.” He ordered the guard. The guard refused. “Sir, this woman accused her of assault. That is strictly prohibited.-” “-Assault? Well as I see it, Prim is my property therefore I have all rights over her now hand her over.” “-But sir.” The guard interjected before thinking better of it and finally releasing me. “She can’t get off just like that. What she did was treason. She should be whipped or lynched for doing what she did to me.” The girl said glowing red. “Believe me, she will not go unpunished.” And with that the fray was over and I was escorted back home. “What were you thinking Prim? You could have gotten yourself killed.” Jasper chastised while I continued on with my chores. I grabbed a dish dunking it in sink water before scrubbing it spotless while Jasper sat on a chair nearby brooding. I didn’t answer choosing to remain silent rather than accusing anyone and risk an even longer lecture. “What happened Prim?” Jasper pleaded putting on a face that said he wanted to help cure all my problems. More silence. “Was it one out of jealousy, out of spite? Or…or was it one of my fans?” he edged me on and even though I hid my emotions he still read me like an open book. “So it was one of them.” He said sighing while he rubbed his temples in frustration till finally he came to a solution.”I’ll tell them to stop bugging you and maybe-” “-you shouldn’t. That would only make it worse.” I said regretting this whole conversation. “Maybe if you were free. Then they would have no right to tease you.” Jasper was trying so hard to help but I knew that my situation was inevitable “You know that you can’t free a war slave, I’d just be sent to jail or killed and not like I can really be free, besides when I leave who’s going to take care of you.” I said making a joke out of it to lighten the mood. It worked for a while but there was still a heavy undertone of gloom. We dropped all means of having a conversation before going our separate ways not knowing how to continue such a dreary topic. © 2010 Crimson RoseAuthor's Note
