Beware the Ides of March

Beware the Ides of March

A Poem by Melanie Jane Boicourt Shanks
"

Wrote for a contest requiring the use of the Ides of March and the warning there of.

"

Beware the Ides of March my friend

For that is when danger arrives

And as that day comes to an end

There may be a loss of lives.

It was spoken from a soothsayers tongue

Who knows?  It might be true.

I couldn't believe the words that were sung

But I feel the need to protect you.

You’ve been a long time friend to me.

I know we’ve had our ins and outs.

But as this warning you open and see

Please try to forget your doubts.

Beware the Ides of March my friend.

Please leave your house or lock your door.

I don’t want our friendship to find its end

And this might be an all out war.

The Ides of March, especially the 15th, stemmed from the fact that Julius Caesar was betrayed and assassinated on that day. The knives aren't out for this write however, it's protected by a shield of creativity and poetical astuteness - fascinating composition!

Ides of March...many a battle have been fought at this time, and many more shall be.
For this I know battles I have fought.
For what? I know not.

You have captured the essence of Ides of March, for war pits friend against friend, father against son and brother against brother.
An intense write for those who know the true meaning of the Ides of March.
Well done!
