The Fishtale

The Fishtale

A Poem by Melanie Jane Boicourt Shanks

At the lighthouse, he looked through the looking glass.

The crashing waves his only sight to see.

But wait, what was that large mass

moving fast out further in the sea?

It looked like a shadow, but nothing was overhead.

It wasn’t a ship, but it was the size of three.

or maybe four, he has a look of dread.

He looks as if he wishes he could flee.

The cherry red of his cheeks are turning pale.

He wonders just how big it is going to be.

From the looks of it, it has to be a whale.

but he’s never seen a whale of this degree.

It’s now the size of nine and moving fast.

He wants to run, but is grounded like a tree.

so he just stood there, as the monster passed.

Or so he told his comrades later, over tea.
