I Declined-A Poem by Nicole LaszloI don't know where she came from I don't know why she came to me But there the child sat on my porch step Gazing up at me With beautiful blue eyes Wide and eager Young and curious She looked happy But beaten and dirty She asked to come in- I declined She looked familiar The spring fell Summer rose And in its heat I opened my door And there the girl sat Again on my porch step Looking up at me with similar eyes Beautiful and blue Scared and concerned Cautious, but still curious Still happy, but still dirty Who is she? She asked to come in I declined- She looked like an old friend Fall stepped in Knocking on my door I pulled on a light jacket And stepped out, embracing the chilled wind There the young lady stood No longer looking up Still with beautiful blue eyes Now sharper No longer innocent The curiosity dulled But tinted with adventure Smiling warmly Still beaten and dirty So familiar She asked shyly to come in I declined- I'll never know why But I know her- from somewhere Winter finally came Sharp and cold I opened the door My scarf hugging my throat And there she stood Off in the yard this time I walked up to her She quickly became more and more familiar Again, beautiful blue eyes Piercing against the white snow Calm and casual Knowing and warm A smile held at her lips Her bruises fading The dirt cleaned off by snow I don't know why, but I offered to let her in She declined- And walked away © 2016 Nicole LaszloReviews
