What HappenedA Poem by Megan E Twenter
So tired of worrying
wondering, wishing that everyone would pull their head out of the clouds It feels as though Im running, fighting and everyone else is standing around Im tired of feeling like racing, battling while everyone else falls to the ground What happened to people the ones who had dreams that woke with the sunrise watched from the trees What happened to children who ran in the fields who picked up the tadpoles to watch life unreal What happened to parents who played make-believe made a home cooked meal not just for a hungry mouth to feed What happened to daughters, to sons full of choice With love in their hearts Driven by a father's voice What happened to dusk when the dark was lit and the wood would burn in the fire pit What happened to autumn hot cocoa, and leaves a walk through the park with a warm night breeze What happened to laughter what happened to joy what happened to your brain being the only toy I guess what Im saying is I just dont understand how you can live in a world run by reprimand When the children are inside playing video games and the parents out drinking dont remember the names And the sunrise is coming but only the birds see in the frigid winter weather upon a dying bare tree And the dusk may be coming but the fire is out and the ashes turn to dirt for the warmth was stout The family is living but the relationship dead and everyone's fighting over the biggest bed What happened to happiness where the hands used to hold and the songs would ring loudly the laughter be bold What happened to everyone Everywhere, in every place Including myself from an empty space In a world full of hatred where a child might cry because his heart is aching for a lullaby One sweet simple kiss upon one's warm brow I remember this And I just wonder how In a world full of people all different, yet the same Is it me or is it you That is left with the blame
