I Am Born

I Am Born

A Poem by MeganRuth

I am born female in a time
a man can commit a crime
and the woman who testified
is still the one being scrutinized.

I am born queer in a Nation
where I’m set for damnation
because their religious text
states that I am vexed.

I am born premature and unhealthy
to parents who aren’t wealthy.
No subsidized healthcare,
we can only use prayer.

I am born abandoned and unwanted,
another orphan who is daunted,
because I am here needing a home,
but you want to sustain your genome.

I am born in twenty eighteen
in a world that was green
and full of beauty
now a decaying mess of
overpopulated cruelty.

With the exception that the first line I believe is missing an "a" ("I am born female in A time")- for the progression of that stanza doesn't seem to make much sense without it- this poem is amazing! Powerful and profound. I feel there's some personal aspects to it, but at the same time it feels like it's universal, which is a feat in itself. The imagery is strikingly vivid and engaging, the rhymes are on point, and it all flows spectacularly. Well done!
