The Art of Emotion and Image

The Art of Emotion and Image

A Poem by winter;lyra

The poet is no storyteller,
So, I can assure you
As far as you're concerned
That there is no cryptic message behind my words.
It is
What you can see AND feel
And that, dear dreamer
Is up to you.
The poet, if anything, is a painter
Who uses words instead of paint
As such each stroke is only essential as long as it remains in the piece
As such dismantling the composition is an act of
vandalization

As far as you're concerned, it is not about me.
It is what you can see and feel
Whatever it may be
As varying as it may be
Because that's how it should be
The piece is to invoke emotion and image
Out of us
Both the poet and the reader
Leading us to a better understanding of our selves

This, at least, is the kind of poetry I so dearly enjoy to read and write

For a long time, I've had this love-hate relationship with "poetry", sometimes I'd love it, sometimes I would hate it, and it was (still is) hard for me to get into other's poetry and now I understand why.

It is because for a long time I've had this wrong conception of poetry, this conception I've acquired mainly during school. I realize that I what I want is to convey emotion and/or imagery with with my poetry. not tell a story or tell people about my life, I want to express myself with these words and see what I, from the new perspective, and the reader will feel when presented to it. Does everyone feel the same, does anyone feel largely different? Why? Why do I get this feeling and he get this other feeling? With these answers I can get to know myself better, and he, I hope he gets to know himself better.

Idk, maybe this not the definition of "it" but this is what I want for my...thingies I write.

For me, the greatest poetry both moves and informs. Think "Crossing the Bar."
