New JourneyA Story by MeeraSam, 21 travels to London for summer school where she becomes a witness to a murder... The killer decides to eliminate her to get rid of evidence against him, will she make it home alive?"Be careful who you talk to...
Don't stay out late! Skype me every day!! Do you understand?!" "Yes Ma, you've repeated
yourself a million times... I’m only going for a month! I will be back safely,
trust me!" "I'm just concerned... you have
never been away for such a long time and overseas..." "I get it ma, don't
worry..."
Oh sorry... That's just my mum who is
super worried about me. She's never let me stay out past 8 pm, so me travelling
to London for Summer school, let's just say it's a nightmare for my mum! However
for me, I needed this getaway...Ever been so controlled, you feel suffocated...
Yeah that was my life for the past 21 years! Freedom here I come!
(15 June 2016) Okay... Its finally departure day,
being away from home for one whole month for the very first time, I can feel my
legs turning jelly but I cannot show my mum that I am scared, otherwise she is
going to get worried sick. "I adapt to change fast, so I am going to be
okay..." This was my mantra for the entire plane ride. And as expected I adapted myself to the change very quickly, I spent two whole weeks in London
and I am doing great...
...Till today
I am sitting next to a dead body of
an unknown man waiting for the police to show up! Confused... let me back up to
20 minutes ago. I was on the way home from grocery shopping at the supermarket
near my dorm apartment, when I heard two males having a heated argument, I
couldn't help but to hide and watch what was happening as something just did
not feel right! And I was right, there stood a man in his 30s - with a scorpion
tattoo on the side of his neck- holding down the other guy - also in his 30s -
on gunpoint and within seconds he fired his gun and rushed off in his
car.
I stood frozen for a minute or two,
and then got myself together and ran to the injured guy. I tried to check for
pulse whilst shouting "Sir are you alright, can you hear me?!" I couldn't feel any pulse... I called for the police and explained what had happened,
at this point I was unsure of how much the police could understand, as I was
unable to piece my words together and I kept weeping - and this is where you
join me back.
Now all I can do is to sit there
waiting for the police. Within a few minutes, the police arrived at the scene
and cordoned the area whilst I was still in. They questioned me and took my
statements but I was not allowed to leave as they were waiting for the CSI
officers; and apparently the dead man was a cop as well... explains why I was
kept there for further questioning.
This is where things get a little
interesting...
The CSI officers finally arrived at
the scene and Officer Matt began questioning me further and took down my
details for future reference and also advised me to keep them updated on my
whereabouts as I was an important witness to this case. Just as Matt moved an
inch to grab something; a shot was fired from afar, it pierced threw my left
shoulder and I fell hard to the ground from impact. That was the most
excruciating pain I had ever felt in my life, I curled up in pain grabbing on
to my shoulder. The last thing I remembered was Matt chasing after the guy who
fired the shot and sped off in a car- the same car that I saw speeding away
after shooting the cop.
A few days later, I woke up and was
updated on my health condition. According to the doctors, I was recovering
well, but I was still in so much pain, I chose not to believe them. Roughly an
hour later, Matt walked through the ward door with a file in his hands, he
placed the file at the desk next to my bed and asked how I was doing, I could
see the concern in his eyes and honestly for a moment there, I just couldn't
feel the pain, I kept gazing into his beautiful brown eyes and lost myself in
them. I have never felt anything like that ever before and there was just pure
silence in the room, or at least until another officer walked into the room.
Matt immediately grabbed the file from the desk and explained his purpose of
visiting me, he showed me a picture and asked if I recognised him, it took me
awhile but I realised it was the killer. They had managed to track down the car
that sped off after shooting me and that was how the killer was in their list
of prime suspects and now that I could identify him, they were able to work on
collecting evidences to prove him guilty.
Matt grabs my hand, assured me that
he would catch the killer and walked out the room. As he walked out; my eyes
followed, I just wished he would have stayed longer or that the officer hadn't
walk in for a little longer, I was just playing out everything that could have
happened if given more "alone time" before the officer walked in.
Moments later, the door opened again; a male nurse walked in, to change my
drops, as he was replacing the drops a scorpion tattoo on his neck caught my
attention - the same tattoo as the killer. Thinking that I was just being
paranoid, I asked if I could see his face without the mask to clear a doubt, he
immediately grabbed a pillow and forced it upon my face and started suffocating
me... I struggled to break-free but he was too strong... I kept fighting but I
started losing energy and hope, I gave up... slowly closing my eyes, I accepted
the fact that today was the last day I was going to be part of this world...
"Hey! Get your hands off the
pillow and back off now, or I will shoot!" I could hear the
words but it was muffled as the pillow was my covering my ears, I couldn't tell
who it was but all I knew was my chances of survival just increased. "Now!!!
Do it, back off from her!” I could feel the pressure on the pillow
slowly being lifted off; I pushed off the pillow and jumped off the bed. It was
Matt and a few other police, as the police went on to hand-cuff the killer, I
ran to Matt and hugged him in joy! I was relieved that I wasn't dead; I was
free to go home and back to school as the killer was already in custody. A few
days later, Matt drove up to my apartment to give me a ride to the court where
I had to give my witness statement in the murder of Inspector David Williams.
Thankfully, this is not where the
story ends...
After the hearing, the killer was proved guilty. Matt and his team were having a small celebration for the successful completion of the case. Matt invited me to the celebration, where we had small talks and got to know each other better, Matt and I are now good friends! But as I always tell my girl-friends, "It all starts out as friends... doesn't it?" but for now I am glad to be just friends with Matt... Let’s see what the future holds for us... © 2016 MeeraAuthor's Note
