My Fate
A Poem by
Meallea Pomorette
The story of the Trojan princess Cassandra
Where am I? Where? Where? Whose house am I taken to?
Why can I hear cries of children pleading for help?
How poor are those children. There's no one to help them.
They were torn limb by limb then cooked without conscience,
Served to their father without any idea.
Oh! This house is cursed! Angry souls seek for vengeance.
And now many deaths will be added to the list
Including my own. But do I deserve this fate?
I was once a princess of a mighty kingdom.
A kingdom brought down into ashes by the Greeks.
It was hated by the gods just for a judgment.
Cursed the apple which caused my kingdom, Troy, to fall.
If that fated day did not happen, all is well.
Everything will not be taken away from me.
How cruel my fate is. The odds are against me.
Is this the payment because I turned down a god?
Yes, I dared what many women won't ever do.
I turned down Apollo, the god who once loved me.
Those days and nights he came upon me, courted me,
And tried to win my love. He showered me with gifts.
He dared to whisper many sweet things to my ears.
But after all those things, I still denied his love.
His gift! Oh! His wonderful gift of prophecy!
He tried to take it back but he cursed me instead.
Now this is what I get for turning down a god.
This gift of prophecy made life a living hell.
I can still see things which are fated to happen
But the sad truth is there's no one to believe me.
In one of my visions, I saw my kingdom fall.
I warned my father but he would not believe me.
As Troy falls, I clung down to Athena's image
Whose temple was the place where I seek my refuge.
Oh! But despite that, the Greeks still took me away.
Ajax dragged me, laid violent hands upon me.
And such vile act displeased and angered Athena.
So she laid her wrath upon the Greeks as they sail.
Now the Greeks and I are even. They share my fate.
They will feel all the hardships I am suffering.
The feeling of being far away from your home,
Forever a wanderer, searching what is lost.
And here in this ill-fated house where blood flows on,
Where Tantalus tried to serve his son to the gods,
Where Atreus served his nephew to Thyestes,
Yes, here in this very house my life will soon end.
In the memories of men, forever I'm lost.
I'm the princess who was wronged and fated to die.
I'm Cassandra and my story's about to end
As I walk inside the palace embracing death .

What a powerful poem, and a great piece of history.

What a powerful poem, and a great piece of history.
The act of eating babies repeats itself in the stories of Sparta where weak children were left in the mountains to be fed by eagles. Don Juan of the Carlos Casteneda books used the same imagery in the Spanish practice to say that when a person dies, they have to walk past the eagle who will peck at them to eat.
We need to relate these legends to the context of the age, situation and personality. It concerns us. The myth continues.

I always loved Greek mythology, but I could never imagine being a part of it, especially a woman, which I'm not...even the female gods treat them lousy, sometimes for no explicable reason other than padding their own vanity...I love this take on the story, you did a wonderful job with it.

It's difficult to take a pre-conceived story and place it into a poetic form but you have done it with good imagry and reference to emotion. I would like to see more metaphor in your work but this is very readable and enjoyable.
