The reason I left

The reason I left

A Poem by Charles E.McManus

My steps fell heavy upon the boardwalk as I heard the front doors silent closing

Holidays, birthdays, long pillow talk nights trapped forever behind cold unflinching walls

As I step upon the boardwalk, the children’s teardrops stain my memory

The wind howls cold like wolves on the hunt, biting hard upon my face as I turn to go

Loving gestures, soft kisses, holding hands in the car, forsaking all others all promised and given freely

Yet as time passed these things faded with each winter season turning your heart cold and gray like fog upon the northern sea and I was left at shore cold and lonely with no comfort or arms to hold me by daybreak

You ask the reason I left ; “ what did I do?”

It’s not what you did but what you didn’t do
It’s the reason I left you
