The ShadowA Poem by McKenzie J ChattertonA poem I wrote in high schoolTrees, swing, rock garden shed by the metal fence, everything in its place I shift my eyes to the woods just beyond my backyard something was different: the red-orange sunset bled into the background a tall shadow lurking behind the trees creeping towards my window with each step its came nearer, its features now clear I had seen this shadow before and I knew how powerful it was It reached out beckoning for me to come closer My eyes grew wide as it reached my window the sound of my heart pounding was deafening I gathered every last drop of power I had left With a surge of energy I threw myself towards the window Smash! Glass flew in every direction When I unshielded my eyes I saw that evil shadow falling The glass shredding it into nothing I looked down, examining my body, not finding one scratch I smiled to myself and proudly walked away I was finally happy And misery had died without its company © 2016 McKenzie J Chatterton |
