AN UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACKISH DAUGHTERA Poem by MaySmallzA poem about the beauty that lies between the Black Skin
I was told my skin is black and dirty
I was told I look filthy and needed cleansing I was told I needed to hide in shame during the day And cry my eyes out at night wishing I had been moulded with a different clay They told me i didnt have the right to stand beside the light skinned girl next door. They told me when she spoke I had to be quiet and listen to everything she said They told me she was everything and anything she touched turned golden They told me she was an Angel and I was just a filthy rag she could toss around They told me i was privileged to know her and I had to worship the ground she walked on Oh…How they Lied,Oh…How I believed them How I let them insult my Beautiful Black Skin How i forgot that i was bathed in chocolate and caramel butter That i was coated with brown sugar and im dripping Melanin That i’m bronzed with elegance and enameled with grace With skin Toasted,Baked and Laced with glitters But now i know better, now i carry the pride in my smile and my shoulder is held high when I walk There’s pride in my voice when I speak now. Now it’s clear to the world that I’m an Unapologetically Blackish daughter of my Father. © 2017 MaySmallzAuthor's Note
