The wind

The wind

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

the wind rushes,
threshing my cheeks;
the wind is flush,
carrying the smells
of oceans, corn husks,
plowed fields,
the neighbor’s sweets;
the wind brushes
the sky blue
to young eyes who gaze
up, below trees;
the wind bellows,
embellishing its voice,
raging mad, standing
outside of thresholds,
demanding to be let in;
finally settling down
because it’s grown
hoarse;
the wind touches,
but has no hands;
a motherly instinct,
it cradles eagles
that soar over highlands;
the wind tunnels,
invisible runnels which
trench and bore,
sweeping, channeling,
churning out funnels
that destroy things
when it breathes;
then it leaves
as a criminal
does a crime scene...
Quietly,
but only for a time;
it’s a recidivist;
it loves to kill,
cause catastrophes,
seasonally,
for a thrill.
the wind tickles
our noses sometimes,
making us sneeze;
I like it in fields
when it sits, lurking
in the reeds,
waiting to steal me
from a bad dream,
or just in time
from a bee sting;
it is then it’s kind,
and kin to me.
The wind can be
subtle, incalculable;
a devil
you will never please;
it will live forever
according to its needs.

You have really captured the movement of winds in your lines. Gentle like a breeze or raging in strength and destructive. I also like the way you have reminded us of the scents that can be carried with them. Such a contrast conveyed here. Thank you Maxwell and Happy New Year to you. All good wishes.

Your staccato lines serve their purpose here, like the unrelenting wind itself. A masterful pen you write with, Maxwell.

...thank you!
I read some of your short poems posted recently . . . didn't review, but enjoyed. I admit I prefer a longer poem like this one. This is one of the best of yours that I've read so far. I love how you go on & on & on with more & more details. Many times poets go on & on, but without new ideas. What makes this so compelling, it's a constant stream of fresh ideas, things we never think to associate with wind, but then each detail is so fitting. I also love how you express yourself in dynamic phrasing so the message comes alive (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Sorry if it got a bit long-winded *snort* *wink* - sorry, I had to go for the cheap pun there.
