Mortician's rendition

Mortician's rendition

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

dying with eyes open
is having a funeral
with your coffin so;
I only want God
reading the secrets
on the back of my
retina, and my retinue
in its chairs, seated,
not standing in line
to read the mortician's
tabloid rendition.

I have to say, I don't understand the message of this piece at all.
My uncle had a friend who was a mortician, and as a child I was curious about exactly what he did.
His kids were quite generous with their ghoulish dead people stories, and apparently lots of folks die with an unpleasant facial expression.
The mortician's kids said, (and I have since found out they were telling the truth) that their dad glued people's eyelids shut, so that they would not roll up and expose the eyeballs of the dead. Likewise, the mouth, to keep it from dropping open.
Therefore, you'd better not die, man. If you do, you just may be f***ed as far as information about your death rictus is concerned.
Just saying.

I'm donating my old, unlovely body to the body farm in Tennessee. No funeral.

Wow, this is deep, dark and hauntingly good. Creepy even. As no one, when they die. Just wants some strange person reading something about them or mixing them up. The way they perceived you where when you where alive. When only God or someone really close to you understands what makes you tick and who you are. And what you liked and hated.

Dawn, absolutely - thanks for understanding what I was after. I will keep my death to myself.
