Blackbird pie

Blackbird pie

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

When I was wee young
I thought blackbird pie
Had beaks and feathers
Sticking out of it,
And the perforations
In the crust were their
Attempts to escape
A gruesome death,
So I stayed away from
Desert with blackberries
Too, because I thought
That was bird poo;
I thought a commode
Was a Roman ruler,
But that turned out to be
another kind of throne.
And I was distraught
People ate chow,
As I kept thinking of
How untasty my neighbor’s
Big furry dog would be
On my dinner plate.

I so enjoyed your lines. The things children think and say can be so endearing. It must have been the nursery rhyme that put you off your pie. Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye, four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. Yes many a child would have seen beaks and feathers too. Some nursery rhymes were quite horrifying really. Your commmode and chow memories having their own meaning for you. London Bridge is falling down, chip chop, chip chop the last mean's head. That rhyme scared me to death. I didn't want to join in ;) Thank you Maxwell.

Yes, and that’s probably not half of the misunderstanding and fright rhymes and songs engendered. .. read more

This is a great collection of childhood misunderstandings & I bet we all must share one or two when we review this! *wink! wink!* I broke a living room window & that evening my dad kept saying he felt a "draft" but I thought he was saying he felt a "GIRAFFE"!! I was sure the giraffe must be sticking its head thru the broken window pane & I would be busted at any moment! Your blackberry/blackbird pie idea is so good, it plants an idea for my next macabre scribble! Thanks for reminding us! (((HUGS))) Fondly Margie
