When playas wail
From scores of undocumented
Whales beached,
Are secrets of an unknown
Conspiracy teeming ashore?
Or do they conspire
To tell man they’ve grown sick
On his seas of debris,
In a violent plea for sanity?
Or do they seek sanctuary
from bands of killer Orcas
And irradiated krill
They are forced to eat?
Or have they simply
mass suicided on some
Jim Jones drink of
the petroleum club cult,
the victims of some oil spill,
For which they choked
In the Gulf of Mexico?
Or are they ignorant
Pagans duped by Neptune
To set foot on dry land,
In a desire to become human,
The very enemy of fins,
Just as Icarus wanted wings
To escape his world of Crete,
Becoming part bird,
But falling back to Earth,
Burned, in an act of hubris?

This is the most powerfully-written rant I’ve seen to condemn the way we humans have treated the oceans like a dumping ground. The big Pacific garbage patch is too huge to be fathomable & most people don’t even realize it’s been floating out there for years. Your message includes many startling details taken from all walks of life & history, but to make the connection between this current-day curse and the old tale of Icarus – that’s a truly brilliant comparison. To me, this is the crux of good writing, when you can see a connection that nobody else sees, then you frame it in word pictures so intense & convincing (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Shameful the way we have polluted our ocean's with plastics and other debris. This poem covers this subject well in a most poetic way. Thank you

So true, Christine...so true. Feel compelled to write about it. Not my only poem about it. Here’s .. read more
Just brilliant. It touches all the points on pollution and the effects it's having on our oceans. Nice rythm and it fluidity for the reader.
