If only I

If only I

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

If only I hadn't
If only I didn't
If only I won't commit
the wouldn't haves,
but can't
because it's just
what is,
an impulsive act
of my future-gone-past
- the non-committed
moment,
hastily spent, when
I know I shouldn't have;
it's imprudent,
but we humans lack.
We could've, should've,
but went ahead and did
the opposite of
what intellect said,
letting heart
romance him instead.
