Proud Of Me

Proud Of Me

A Poem by Charlotte Lee
"

Inspired by a homophobic comment made by a member of my own family. It started out as a rant, but it's about anyone who has ever been in my position.

"

The answer I give whenever I get

that predictable question, that lingering look
from someone who doesn’t know me at all
and hasn’t yet seen my postered wall.
The signs are so clear, it’s hardly big news
to look at me now and see who I’d choose.

But do me a favour, don’t be a prick,
don’t treat me strangely like some kind of freak.
You won’t figure it out, or understand why,
curiosity, confusion will pass me right by.
But that look of disgust, whether hidden or plain,
just won’t do a thing, because I won’t explain.
