The Defiant Woman

The Defiant Woman

A Poem by Charlotte Lee
"

Based on 'The Couple' by Georges Seurat

"

Standing like a statue so tall and still

in the gloom of the day there is nothing
much to do except stand. And look. And wait.
And be as stylish as is possible.
What I don’t understand is this: the rules,
the fashions and the way of living here.
I hate the things I’m forced to wear, they weigh
me down, suffocating me even in
this murk. What can I do but stand and watch?
Things won’t ever change for me, I can’t do
a thing so I’ll just keep on living here,
alone by his side in a place so strange,
so unfamiliar as the deserts
of Egypt, where each person looks the same
as each grain of the sand. A whole place that’s
holding me so tight, under the pressure
of the world we live. I’ve had to hide to
protect my self from all the rules and the
regulations, fashions, society
that controls our lives like we don’t matter.
