I
learned that ABC quickly turns to CBA.
And earphones have more than one use.
How to avoid being picked on by the teacher by looking deep in thought.
How to sweet talk friends into lending me their homework,
and when all else fails, how to beg, borrow and steal.
I learnt how to sleep with my eyes open.
How to say ‘I don’t know’ in every language they taught.
How to ‘umm’ until someone else was asked.
I learnt that ‘scruffy’ comes naturally to me,
and that maroon is definitely my least favourite colour.
If a hippo and a rhino had a fight, the hippo would always win.
And that singing is the best way to remember anything.
That coming out in an all girl’s school is almost to be expected.
How to use a teacher for target practice
and that scissors just aren’t made the way they used to be.
How fire alarms are anxiously anticipation, whatever the weather.
And how ice pops are an all year round favourite.
I learnt how to glare, how to flirt, how to act like a fool,
how to look totally innocent while being completely guilty,
how to amuse a whole class with only one word
and that the funniest, most embarrassing things are usually said without
thinking.
And the most important thing I learnt was the true meaning of pain:
Hair straighteners.
