INT. CAR - DAY
Act 1 Scene 1
                                                     FADE IN:
A family is driving in the car. The mother is driving with a son and daughter in the back seat. The car is loaded to the brim with bags. The father, on the other hand, is singing way too loudly in the car.
TILLIE Dad. (pauses) Dad.
TILLIE turns off the car radio.
TILLIE        (CONT'D)
DAD!
DAD Fu- Why did you scream?
TILLIE Cause you couldn't hear me.
MOM It wasn't needed.
TILLIE Aaaaaanyways, why haven't you told us anything about this place we're moving to?
DAD Well that's because I don't know that much about it either.
MOM My father is gravely ill and he sold his old home to live in this new one. The family can't afford a stay at home nurse so your father is going to take care of him.
PHILIP
Why?
DAD Because you need to take care of the family.

PHILIP But he's old. Can't we just put him down as we did for Rover?
MOM No! You can't do that to people!
PHILIP That's racist.
TILLIE (pause) Where did you come from? 'Cause it's not Earth.
DAD Alright, alright. Calm down you two.
The car pulls into the driveway of a relatively large home. The kids hop out of the car and stare at the adults start to unload the car.
PHILIP We're rich!
TILLIE No. Papa is rich. We are bums.
DAD (sarcastic) You're a ray of sunshine dear.
The family all grab two bags each and enters the house to take in its glory. PHILLIP drops his bags in the hall and runs away.
PHILIP I call the biggest room!
TILLIE Nuh uh! I get it since I'm older!
MOM Actually your Papa gets it cause he owns the place.
TILLIE fallows PHILIP down the hallway to peer into the empty rooms. The room is occupied with old furniture and painting that are covered. She is drawn to the pictures and window that looks out to a body of water. Her mother surprises her after touching the painting's cover.

TILLE Can we set up a system where people have to knock before coming in?
MOM Oh you're at that age now... Fine, it's not a huge demand.
TILLIE Thanks... Can I have this room?
MOM (shrugs) Sure, it's quite small though. There are bigger rooms in the house.
TILLIE Nah I like seeing the water from here.
Tillie's mom nods her head and walks out of the room. TILLE is finally able to peel off the white sheet to reveal a painting.
MOM (from a distance) Tillie! Come meet your Papa!
TILLIE sighs and heads down to where her family is in the living room. PHILIP is still inspecting all over the room. DAD guides TILLIE over to Papa who sits in a chair.
MOM     (CONT'D) Dad, this is my little girl Tillie! Do you remember her?
PAPA tilts his head up slowly with a wide smile spreading across his face.
PAPA Ah yes. I remember. She's the one I would always read bedtime stories to her.
MOM That's a right dad!

PAPA Then her mother would come in and always told me to stop talking nonsense. For the girl will sing to her if she stays up!
MOM No dad... That was when I was younger.
PAPA Ah yes yes. That's right...What's your name again boy?
DAD It's Tim, sir.
PAPA I don't know any Timothy.
DAD It's just Tim-
PAPA Lets go get some food. I'm hungry!
PAPA hobbles out of his chair to DAD where he smacks him on the butt before sitting at the dining room table. He laughs to himself while everyone else shuffles around.
DAD I don't think I'm ever going to get used to that...
TILLIE (giggles) Hopefully you won't need to.
MOM I'm...just going to order some pizza.
TILLE spends her time in her room. She unpacks boxes and suitcases that have moved with them along with furniture that's been placed in by her mother and father. When finally done, she stands in the center to approve her work. DAD walks in with some lemonade.
TILLIE Well, what do you think?
DAD It looks great pumpkin.

TILLIE Good as in it describes who I am or good as in it looks like I put in a lot of hard work?
DAD Uh...Both?
TILLIE There was hesitation. Hesitation means uncertainty. (pauses) You're right, I should change the room up again.
TILLIE bends down to pick up her stuff to rearrange around again. Her dad comes in and takes it out of her hands and back where it once was.
DAD Tillie, it's fine. But what's not fine is that you have been in your room for the past week and not once have you tried to make new friends.
TILLIE You're right...Just been kinda putting it off.
DAD I know dear. But being cooped up inside all the time is going to drive you mad and miss our old home even more...
TILLIE Okay. I trust you.
DAD Plus I think you're brother needs a walk.
TILLIE giggles to herself before grabbing her phone and headphones. Moving past her dad and into the hallway, they both enter the living room where PHILIP sits on the couch watching TV; brain dead.

PHILIP (CONT'D) world pretty much has been discovered.
PHILIP goes back to watching TV. TILLIE take the remote and turns off the TV with a reluctant groan behind her.
TILLIE First off that's not true, otherwise, we wouldn't have new discoveries practically every year. Secondly, too bad you're coming anyway.
PHILIP Ugh fine! (mumbles) Not like I have a choice or anything.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Act 1 Scene 2
The siblings leave the household and head into the forest. PHILIP barrels in the head on without a care in the world. TILLIE takes her time by taking photos of the nature around them. After a while, PHILIP runs off on his own.
TILLIE Hey doesn't run off on your own! I'm not responsible if you get hurt!
She finally is able to catch up to PHILIP and finds him throwing sticks and stones into a pool of water. TILLIE recognizes the water for it sits outside her window. The water seems to glisten at her.
PHILIP The water looks kinda gross huh?
TILLE ignores him and walks closer to the edge.
PHILIP        (CONT'D) Hey! Don't ignore me! The hell!
She reaches her hand out to touch the water when a sudden voice startled her.
LOUIS Don't touch the water!
A boy stands in between the trees. He jogs down to TILLIE so he can pull her away from the water. She snaps out of The trance but is confused.

LOUIS holds a hand out to TILLIE.
LOUIS       (CONT'D) My name's Louis. I live on the other side of these woods.
PHILIP So how did you know to come here to find us?
LOUIS Well, I did go to your house but your pap said that you guys went out on a walk. And this is the only place people ever really walk in.
The three kids walk together back to TILLIE's home.
LOUIS       (CONT'D) So why did your family decide to move into this middle-of-nowhere type of town?
PHILIP Our grandpa is old and lonely.
TILLIE No, not entirely. Our grandpa is sick and our grandma passed away so there's no one left to take care of him. So my dad decided that it would be best if he took care of him while my mom works. She grew up in this town so it'll be easier for her to get a job.
LOUIS Man, you're mom's lucky. I've wanted to leave ever since the mirror lake first sang to me.

TILLIE The mirror lake?
LOUIS The one we were just at. There's an old town urban legend that if the lake starts to sing for you, something bad will happen.
PHILIP Sounds fake.
LOUIS It's real! I used to think it was a story parent told their kids so that they wouldn't play by the water. But then there was a body that was found.
TILLIE Which lake?
LOUIS The one we were just at.
PHILIP
Cool.
TILLIE No, not cool! (pauses) Besides, did they found out how they died?
LOUIS The guess is from an animal attack and the guy just fell in. (dramatically) His face was torn off except the lips, which are curled into a smile.
TILLIE No way that happened.
LOUIS Alright, I may have taken some creative input on it but there really was a body. Google it.
PHILIP Cool! Will I get to see a dead body?

LOUIS Ah it's okay. Nice to see someone with so much spirit. Most of the people here are reserved and don't talk much. Usually, they just keep to themselves.
TILLIE And you obviously don't fit into the stereotype.
LOUIS Is that good or bad for me?
TILLIE (pauses) I'll say it will be a good thing. Unless you turn into a crazy chainsaw killer.
LOUIS (chuckles) You watch too many horror movies.
TILLIE Keeps me on guard in case there's a surprise attack.
TILLIE jumps into a fencing pose and jokingly stabs at LOUIS. He laughs at her attempts to be threatening.
LOUIS Well now that I know where you live, maybe I'll swing by sometime?
TILLIE Sure, that sounds nice. But make sure to knock beforehand or I'm gonna have to fight you.

INT. HOME - DAY
Act 1 Scene 3
Inside PHILIP is complaining to their parents and arguing with them about wanting to use the computer.
MOM (to Tillie) Why is your brother asking to use the computer to look for a dead body?
TILLIE Because the boy who lives on the other side of the trees said someone died in the lake.
DAD Is that true?
MOM Sadly yes. But it happened a long time ago, I was only just a little girl. (pauses) It always haunted me how the killer was never found.
PAPA He just wanted to go swimming with the pretty lady! But he should have known that she doesn't like people.
TILLIE What lady? Did she kill the man?
PAPA
What man?
PHILIP The one in the lake.

INT. TILLIE'S ROOM - DUSK
Act 1 Scene 4
Some time has passed where Tillie has now become comfortable in her home. PAPA can be heard yelling at the people on the television from a distance. As if they can respond back to him. TILLIE is in her room sketching with music lightly playing in the background.
LILY (hush voice) Tillie.
TILLIE stops sketching to try and listen closely to what she thinks is a voice. A singing that's not coming from her speakers is only faintly heard. So she turns off the music and can hear that the music is coming from a different source. It sounds like the music is coming outside her window, with a trans-like state, she follows it.
Before leaving the house, PAPA sees her and surprisingly places a hand on her shoulder.
PAPA Where you going buttercup?
TILLIE I'm... not too sure. I hear someone singing. I don't know why but I want to listen more.
PAPA Ah. She's hungry again.
PAPA walks back over to his lounge chair.

PAPA (pauses) Oh hello child. How are you doing?
TILLIE smiles and waves goodbye before leaving to follow the voice. The sound comes from within the forest. Without any hesitation, she enters, guided by the soft music the steadily grows louder.
The song leads her to the lake where a girl with long hair sits at the edge of the bank. Her back faces away from TILLIE as she continues to hum her melody.
TILLIE tip-toes closer, causing a branch to snap underneath her. The mysterious girl turns around and stares at TILLIE. She ducks further in the water to hide.

She doesn't respond.

DAD Hey sugar plum. What's wrong?
He notices the small puddle forming at her feet.
DAD     (CONT'D) How did you get so wet? It hasn't been raining today.
TILLIE Uh... Yeah, um, I just fell in some water.
PAPA hobbles into the conversation.
PAPA Was it in the... Milkshake?
DAD (sighs) Your milkshake is in the kitchen Craig.
TILLIE rushes upstairs while he is turned away from her. She throws on more comfortable clothes. Thinking of the girl, she goes over to the painting with a mermaid on it. The minute she touches the painting she hears singing outside her window. But when she leans out the window, her vision goes black.

She gets down on her hands and knees. Dipping her hand into the water.
TILLIE (to the water) Hey, Lily... Can you come out again? Sorry, I ran before, I was just shocked.

LILY (in Tillie's mind) It's easier for me to talk down here. Would you like to see my world?
TILLIE nods her head. LILY continues to drag her farther down in the water. TILLIE slowly struggles for air and tries to swim back to the surface. LILY quickly grabs onto TILLIE's face again but plants a kiss on her lips. She tries to blow air into TILLIE's mouth but most of it escapes.

TILLIE walks into her home and trudged up the stairs. Her parents frantically coming up to her.

MOM Are you even listening to us! Don't you dare think that you can get away with that little stunt of yours? You are grounded!

She turns on the shower and strips off her clothes. Slowly stepping into the warm shower. While washing her body, she remembers LILY in an intimate manner. She traces over all the places that LILY had touched her before being interrupted by a knock on the door. TILLIE quickly dashes out of the shower and wraps a towel around herself.

TILLIE        (CONT'D) So, I barely know this person. But I want to be with them longer when I see them. When I do though, it feels like I can't breathe.
LOUIS (pauses) Sounds like a lucky guy.
TILLIE That's what you would think...but it's a girl...
LOUIS
A girl?
TILLIE nods her head and waits in silence for a response.
LOUIS       (CONT'D) Do, do you normally feel this way toward girls?
TILLIE No! Never. (pauses) Doesn't help that I've never really dated before.
LOUIS Why's that?
TILLIE Never interested.
The room is uncomfortable and awkward that can clearly be read by their body language.
LOUIS My advice is... that you probably like this girl. To what extent I don't know.
LOUIS places a hand on her shoulder and smiles.
LOUIS       (CONT'D) But I would be glad to help you along the way.
TILLIE Thanks. That actually means a lot to

me.
LOUIS jumps out of the bed and claps his hands with a huge smile on his face. A 180 in the tone of his voice to be more cheery.
LOUIS Okay girl! Tell me everything about ya boo. No detail is unimportant. Then we can make a game plan to sweep her off her feet!
LOUIS goes to a counter to grab bright color glasses and clicks his tongue in response. TILLIE's body relaxes and she can have a full hearty laugh.
EXT. FOREST - NIGHT
A small bundle of pohutukawa flowers, TILLIE walks through the forest. She fumbles with her dress into making it as presentable as possible. Once again the lake was lit up but LILY wasn't in sight. She debates on calling for her a few times, back and forth.
TILLIE Lilly? Lilly are you there?
Only the sounds of nature respond.
TILLIE        (CONT'D) (scuffs) I should have known...
TILLIE moves to walk away when she hears the water moving and turns around. LILY emerges from the water with a broad smile. She swims closer to the bank
LILY
Hi.
TILLIE You came back... (clears throat) I thought if we were going to keep meeting like this, I should bring some flowers.
TILLIE bends down to hand LILY the flowers. She takes the flowers and smells them.
LILY I love it.

TILLIE lets out a sigh of relief.
TILLIE Good! (pauses) So they are from a Pohutukawa tree. They also call it the New Zealand Christmas tree for right after December they start to die.
LILY So beautiful.
TILLIE Do you mind if I come in the water with you?
LILY reaches out a hand to TILLIE.
LILY
Please.
TILLIE strips off her dress to reveal a bathing suit underneath. She takes ahold of LILY's hand and carefully submerges herself in the water. Once facing close to each other, LILY picks a petal off and holds it out to TILLIE. Willingly she drinks the nectar.
TILLIE So before when you said you liked me, I was still afraid of you. But I'm not anymore. (pause) And well... I like you too.
LILY moves in closer to kiss TILLIE deeply.
The screen starts to fade to black. During black and when it's fading back into the shot of a newspaper, LILY can be heard giggling softly in the back.
EXT. FOREST - DAY
Act 2 Scene 3
After one year later, LOUIS is walking through the forest with a pet dog with him. The dog runs off to start chasing after something that can't be seen. He follows the pup but loses track. Sounds of splashing draws his attention to the lack where he sees the back of the head of a girl.
LOUIS Tillie? Is that you?

TILLIE turns around to face LOUIS with a cheeky smile.
TILLIE Long time no see Louis.
LOUIS Dude, people think you're dead!
TILLIE Come help me out then.
LOUIS bolts into the water to help her out. When TILLIE's hand touches his and he starts to lift her out, her face changes as she screams at his face. She flicks her tail as the screen goes black.
