Alice

Alice

A Poem by Mavis Bard

Beyond the wonderland halls and scarlet-colored doors
The Queen of Hearts has become a w***e
The Jack of Clubs will rise and club your unclean eyes
And beat them down into your heart

She's storming through the halls
She's storming through the halls
She's storming up to end my calls

The rabbit runs with fear and the hatter’s laugh is near
The cat’s jaded smile whispers in my ears
A riddle easily ignored by the ever-so-adored
Queen of Heart’s lady-lord

She follows my trail
She follows my trail
Her lips’ taint stills my wail

There she stands alone with a dark melodic drone
Amid a crowd of mobsters unseemingly stoned
The unsettled cry for blood rules these fields and trees
While my head rolls off my neck staring at my knees

I’m down upon my knees
I’m down upon my knees
Oh, Alice, please don’t point that axe at me…

Alice is extremely popular today! This is another very surreal piece...fitting for the piece that inspired it. The repetition is haunting, giving it a feel of forward movement and inevitability. It is something that needs to be read and re-read to fully appreciate. Well done!

One can certainly see the influence song writing has on your work. This piece has a nice flow to it. I also like your phrasing and your use of rhyme. I think that you do a good job making allusions but still creating something that is your own.
