Long lost friendA Poem by MattWritten about the books ''a series of unfortunate events'' which were my favourite books as a child!Sitting on the floor of my bedroom at a meagre 10 years old I run my hands over the hardback cover...trying to envisage the stories it holds A hard wooden casing protecting the pages from my sight Suggests a harrowing novel full of misery and strife I have never seen a book quite like the one i hold in my hands The illustrations on the front cover are bold and profound The colours pop and the title demands attention I feel that this book is one of death and redemption As i slowly flip the book onto its reverse I see proof of the sad story i am about to traverse There are words of warning and those of woe But this only intrigues me as to where this will all go I am now more eager than ever to turn to the first page This book is so inviting..so perfect yet strange As i manoeuvre the cover from right to left Im presented with a space to write my name...in case of theft I have never been an owner of such a wonder before Claiming this book as my own feels wonderful There is an intricate pattern that fills every inch of space And before I've laid down my pen I'm in another place Before i know it I'm deep in the story Ive become the Baudelaire children...the protagonist stands before me! I have been introduced to the author and his creations All that I've read so far has exceeded my expectations Im warm and I'm comfortable upon the hard wood floor And as the fire crackles beside me I'm crying out for more As i turn the final few pages not wanting it to end It feels as though i have found a long lost friend © 2017 Matt |
