Doctor Who

Double Paradox

The door of the blue police telephone box sitting at the back of an ally gave a slight creak as it opened and two people stepped out.

“Wow its hot!” said the first. A young thin man of middle height with dark brown eyes that seem to tell you so much and yet so little at the same time.

“So come on Doctor. Where are we?” said the second. A woman with a long face wavy brown hair and blue eyes.

“Earth! 21st century! Australia!” The Doctor replied “and judging by how hot it is it’s the middle of summer”

“You mean you didn’t know you were landing in summer?”

“Nope. I set Australia 21st century into the Tardis console and left the rest to luck… more fun that way. Come on Alexis. Let’s find out what the date is and get a bottle of water too. Way too hot to go without”

“Why do you call me that?” Alexis asked as they began making their way down the alley to where it joined the footpath.

“Sorry?”

“Alexis, why do you call me Alexis?”

“Well… that’s your name. I can’t call you ‘Human’ can I?”

“No you can’t but I always introduce myself as Alex haven’t you noticed?

“You didn’t with me” The Doctor replied as they joined the rest of the crowed on the footpath. “You said your name was Alexis”

“I was working that’s different”

“I can call you Alex if you like”

“I would” Alexis replied “I prefer to keep work and social separate and that’s one of the ways I do it. I guess I sound a bit silly”

“No. I think it’s a grand idea going by one name when you work and another when you’re not I’d say ‘call me Doc’ but I don’t really like the sound of it. This looks nice” The Doctor said and pushed open the door of a small café.

“Let me guess, Water?” A man behind the counter said as he looked up and saw them. “You’re in luck those in the fridge there are my last two bottles. Thanks to this heat wave I’ve been selling drinks all day.” Alexis went over to the fridge and grabbed the two 600ml bottles of water. While the doctor picked up a paper and scanned it quickly then flicked through to the weather page before looking up at the man behind the counter.

“So tell me, if you know how hot exactly it is?”

“53° Celsius and rising”

“I see and do you sell temperature gauges as well?” The Doctor asked as Alexis placed the two Bottles on the counter.

“Over there” The shopkeeper said pointing to a corner next to the fridges “three dollars each, the bottles are two fifty”

“Well we might have one of them too! A bargain wouldn’t you say Alex?” Alexis glared at him as she pulled out her purse. The Doctor just smiled cheekily as he came back to the counter with a temperature gauge. The shopkeeper worked out how much pounds were worth in Australian Dollars and then the doctor and Alexis left, Alexis a few ponds poorer than before. Once outside The Doctor waited for the door, which was swinging slowly shut, to close completely before speaking.

“Come on Alex Back to the Tardis” there was a note of worry in his voice.

“What’s wrong Doctor” Alexis asked as they made their way down the street back to the Ally where the Tardis was parked.

“The date is the 26th of January 2013. The temperature is currently 53.4° Celsius which converts to 128.12° Farenhight and it’s still rising. On the 26th of January next year the hottest temperature ever recorded for Australia is supposed to be 53.1° Celsius, or 127.58 farenhight. And the record is broken next year on December 26th reaching 53.2° which is 127.76° farenhight making one very hot Boxing day. All that together means this is no ordinary heat wave and something more than global warming has had a hand in this. And that something is not human”

“And were going to find out what it is and why am I right?” Alexis asked as they walked into the Tardis

“yes we will have a little chat with them because with this heat people are going to start dying if they haven’t already… and look at this…” the doctor hit a few switches and then turned the Tardis screen toward her. It was a simple news show from the 24th and a woman who was doing the weather.

“The next few weeks starting tomorrow will be unseasonably cold with a top of only 15 and heavy rain Right across the state. Certainly different from the rest of Australia…”

“And then” the doctor said hitting a few more switches. The wether woman remained but her clothes were different and the date at the bottom of the screen changed to the 25th of January. Tomorrow we will experience heavy rain with rivers and creeks expected to rise by 2 meters and will reach a top of 16. Making it only a little warmer than today…” the doctor flicked the screen off and lent against the Tardis console and looked pointedly at Alexis.

“Well she was wrong.” Alexis said slowly “And… well I suppose most people just assume that the instruments were wrong or something but for them to be that wrong they would have to be broken… like not working even the slightest and someone just gave them random information.”

“Good go on” the doctor said

“ok so then there is the heat and what we know about what will happen next year it’s all wrong meaning the instruments aren’t wrong… just… time?”

“Well done! Now do you know what it means if time is wrong?”

“It’s bad”

“Yes but why Alex Why is it bad? If someone ate a nibble more of a banana and made time wrong by doing so it wouldn’t have any bad effects at all and I doubt it would even have an effect so it wouldn’t be bad. Why is it bad this time?” suddenly a scream sounded from outside.

“I’m not sure but they sound like they have a good reason” Alexis said before she and the doctor bolted out of the Tardis and down the alley where a group of people had gathered. The doctor tried pushing through but couldn’t.

“Can't you use your psychic paper or something?” Alexis asked.

“I would but don’t know what’s happened to know what to show people and I just get shushed when I ask what’s happened” Alexis sighed and crouched down peering between peoples legs. Then jumped up again. “Show people you’re a Doctor and Say I’m your trainee.”

“Excuse me, Doctor and his student coming through, what’s going on here” a few people moved aside and they were able to squeeze through in the middle they found a woman lying on the ground. With another woman sitting next to her with tears lining her face and red eyes.

“You’re a doctor? Can you help she just sort of fell”

The doctor took a quick look touched the fallen woman’s lips with a single finger and then got out his stethoscope and after a moment of listening to the fallen woman’s breathing put it away and got out his water

“she has simply dehydrated and has a bit of sun stroke she will be fine as long as you get her air conditioned and keep her hydrated” he said pouring a little bit of water over the woman’s lips and then lifting her head, into her mouth. The woman coughed a little and then people helped move the woman into a shop with air conditioning. And another man ran off after shouting he was going to go find some more water for her.

“He won’t be running for long” Alexis said watching him. Suddenly the Doctor touched a finger to Alexis’s lips. And she fell silent.

“As I thought. That woman’s temperature was wrong. Very wrong I almost burnt myself touching her lips. And her kidney was making funny sounds so whatever’s wrong with her it’s something she drank…” the doctor got out a screen which he clipped to his sonic screwdriver and started scanning the water in his hand. The screen beeped after a moment and writing appeared

“This is not good” he said “I haven’t seen readings like this since the Time war.”

“What is it doctor what’s wrong?”

“This place is not so hot because of the natural heat. It’s so hot because of everyone’s body heat. And this water contains a fluid that was sold to Time lords during the time war by a race known as the Paradaxions they know more about a Paradox than anyone because they invented them hence the similarity in the name of their race and their invention but the name mainly came from a mispronunciation of their races name during the process of naming the Paradox. However, this fluid turns a living body into a paradox machine and it was sold to the Time lords so they could create a double Paradox. Which is a Paradox within a Paradox?”

“So what. Like a Paradox contradicts the way things are but then you have another Paradox contradicting the first Paradox?”

“Exactly. The time lords used these because they could kill thousands of Daleks at once with it and thousands more when the Daleks destroyed the paradox”

“So what are the Paradoxes?”

“They may not have been created yet which is good. But if the paradox does exist already then that’s bad because we have to watch for a fact that contradicts something we know to be fact that is contradicted by another fact that could be either a real fact made a paradox by the original paradox or it could be a paradox made a real fact by the fact that its already a paradox”

“You don’t half confuse me sometimes, you know that?” Alexis said.

“You understand the general idea though?”

“I understand I need to look for contradicting facts”

“Good enough!” with that the doctor ran off up the street

“Doctor wait!” Alexis shouted as she began to run after him “I have an idea!” The doctor slowed to a stop.

“Already?” Alexis nodded catching her breath a moment.

“Is it possible to have a paradox if there is a very small similarity like say not the date but an aspect or one part of the date?”

The doctor nodded slowly

“Well yes but only with a double paradox. It would cause some noticeable changes to time and just general everyday normal things because it such a small similarity”

“Doctor with you nothing is a general everyday normal thing.” The doctor flashed a smile at Alexis and she continued “I was thinking you said the date today is the 26th and to all appearances record breaking heat.” She stopped to make sure she was right and when The Doctor nodded she continued “well you also said next year on the 26th is when the current record is supposed to be broken.”Alexis started speaking quietly, now that she was sharing here reasoning it sounded a bit silly to her despite the doctor saying it was possible “It’s a different month and year but you said one aspect could be the same with this type of paradox” The doctor nodded thinking

“Yes I suppose it’s possible.  Normally I would disregard This idea because its temperature related a natural event that could be changed simply but everyone would notice but as the temperature is caused by people who should be dead because of their body temperature but it seems its natural heat its definitely something to keep in mind… well come on” The doctor finished setting of again at a walk this time
