How Do You Feel?A Story by MatthewMy response to this question, which I get asked daily.
Someone once asked me, "Why do men have a hard time sharing their feelings?"
And every day, my wife asks me some variation of, "How do you feel?" This is my response: For me, personally, it’s hard to say how I feel, because I feel nothing most of the time. My wife will often ask how I feel, or what my opinion is on something, or what I’m thinking about at any given moment. When I tell her the truth, “nothing”, she gets upset with me. “How can you not have an opinion?” She says. “How can you not feel ANYTHING about what’s happening,” she says. I don’t know how. It’s always been that way for me. I see things. I experience things. And, usually, I feel nothing. I’m not psychopathic or anything. I think I’m pretty normal. “But you must be thinking about SOMETHING right now,” she says. No, really, I wasn’t thinking about anything. I was just staring at nothing, and not thinking about it.
