Far From FairA Story by MatthewA short part of a book I've been working on
He dropped the phone and the revelation began to show itself on his face. He started off walking slowly towards his front staircase, shuffling through the empty bottles of brown liquor and cigarette buts and began a full blown sprint. He jumped at the first step and cleared the entire thing landing hard on the bottom, slamming his shoulder into the front door braking the jam and throwing it ajar. Scrambling to his feet he was blinded by the sunlight and used his right hand to try and shield the sunlight from his bloodshot eyes, sipping away the tears he didn't know he had shed. He looked up to see Lucy standing outside near the mailbox at the corner of the driveway. Her jaw fell to her collar and her eyes were wide as she took in what had just happened. When she put together the look on his face as well as his violent exit her look of shock turned to worry.
"John don't!...Whatever you are about to do..please don't!" He stood their for several heartbeats staring at her with a blank expression. He didn't hear what she said, he could t hear anything but the sound of his screaming wife. However by the look on her face and the words on her lips, he understood. He tried to voice the words he needed to. That she was a good person. That it had to be done, he had no choice. His need for vengeance was the only fuel that fed his heart that was now so black and withered. He wanted to thank her for everything she had done for him since Danielle had been gone, he wanted to tell her that in a different life he could have loved her. He didn't speak, he couldn't. John looked away from Lucy and took off sprinting to his left where he parked his GSXR. In one smooth motion he straddled the bike, started it, depressed the clutch, hammered the throttle and dumped it. The rear tire let out a high pitched scream and burned the pavement. The bike gained traction and launched towards the end of the driveway. He gave Lucy one last glance, one that said goodbye and nothing else. She stood there by the mailbox for awhile watching the man she cared for more than anyone in the world vanish on the horizon. She eventually looked down at the the flyer in her hands that read "Buy One Get One Free Fred's Farmers Market!!" in that moment she contemplated life in a way she never had. © 2014 MatthewAuthor's Note
