The City Lights

The City Lights

A Poem by Matt Johnson
"

I wrote this when I was 17 for an old crush. Writerscafe deleted it because I was inactive for so long, but I feel like it's worth reposting!

"

The City Lights
See how they shine for you
These Simple Words
See how they rhyme for you

The Bluest Skies
I'd make them fall for you
To See You Smile
I'd do it all for you

And break down all the walls between us just to see your face
When I hold you in my arms I know that I have found my rightful place
I pray against the hands of time you'll never have to leave
Because when you leave my warm embrace you take a piece of me

The Solid Ground
I'd break it apart for you
The Sweetest Sounds
Echo from my hear t for you

My Trembling Hand
Was meant to be clasped by you
I Don't Think I Can
Loosen my grasp on you

Or break loose all the bonds between us we've fought hard to create
I don't care if the whole world sees us I can't keep up this masquerade
Of pretending not to care at all and masking all this hidden pain
Let the sky crash hard upon us now let the stars fall down like fiery rain

"Let the stars fall down like fiery rain." Such beautiful imagery, I rarely read a love poem that really makes me feel sardonic for not having been loved this way. But it leaves a lot to hope for. I enjoyed this very much, Matt.

I like it because it is very frank, very mentally liberated. In these days, not many people can dare to write such lines:
My Trembling Hand
Was meant to be clasped by you
I Don't Think I Can
Loosen my grasp on you
But you did, so to me it is a feat by itself. Good!

This has such a beautiful cadence to it.
Even though repetitive, it didn't seem redundant to me.
Nice write.
