Backyard

Backyard

A Poem by Jesse Lancaster
"

A small poem I did for a perspective class I took the second semester of my freshmen year. It makes me smile, which I can't say many of my poems do. It's definitely different.

"

Old memories washed and blurred about with the new

Breaking your limbs with careless weight

Poorly maintained and then, only so

much, and even I never expected the day

that I’d look up and say “No”.

Where at one time you begged me to climb

now I was free to better things, refine.

And although I bore down on you with my childish dreams,

I’ll never apologize

because you’re a tree.
