Breath

Breath

A Poem by Mason
"

An inspired piece.

"
If life be a breath,
Then let it be a pant,
A huff after a chase,
Catch it while you can.

Filling up my depressed breast,
Inhaling life in sudden heat,
Faster, faster, my heart will beat,
Inflated lungs try to escape my chest.

Take a breath.
Make a roar.
Like lions, I take
so much more.

Chasing my prey,
stealing more life,
I never delay
even for strife.

Let the blood dance
in your veins
while the chance
still remains.

Fly high on winged chariot.
Fly fast on groundless wheels.
Catch clouds like genies in a lamp.
Make your wishes before you fall.

As I fall, lungs crushed from contrite
under the weight of life's regrets,
I draw last breath and hold it tight
until breaths I can draw no more.

Author's Note

Mason
Winged chariot is a reference to "To His Coy Mistress," which inspired this poem to a degree.
