She Runs

She Runs

A Poem by Maskedthoughts

She runs through the darkness

Black air pools around creating a silent abyss

Her hair long and dark, fights in the air as she runs

Her chest heaves; up and down, up and down

Breath panting, skin burning, sweat dripping.

She's gone but she needs to be missed,

Thump, thump, thump

Her feet are smacking the ground

Blood drips from her arms

Where the branches strike out at her

Mud covers her face

She's running, she's running

She's gone, she's gone

The wind whispers, urging her on.

Faster and faster her arms pump

Her legs aching from her long strides

She makes it to the cliffs edge

The dark clouds shield the moon

Getting rid of any sense of protection that she felt

Down, down she looks

Unsure of what she will find

A howl roars behind her

She feels hot breath on the back of her neck

Her eyes tear, and she jumps off the cliff

Down, down she goes

Flailing through the air

Her body is limp, she embraces the impact

She can't see anything, she can only feel

That's how it should be

She's met by the ice cold substance

She's alive, she's alive,

She sinks deeper and deeper

Her skin prickles, her lungs scream

The cold is unbearable, her clothes weigh her down.

She kicks, in what direction she doesn't know

Up, up she goes

She surfaces, her head thrusting out of the water

Her mouth stretches open breathing in all the air she can

The salt burns her nose, and makes her mouth raw

She coughs and coughs

She's losing hope, losing hope

She floats on her back to catch her breath

Her eyes start to droop ready for sleep

Then waves ripple around her

Pushing her from side to side

She starts to kick, to kick

Strong arms wrap around her hips

Her jeans scratch her ice blue skin

She's being pulled, being pulled.

Her body is limp giving into whoever found her

Her foot scrapes something sharp

She feels the pain, hot and burning

But she can't respond

Blood gushes freely into the ice water

She hears a deep voice swear

She is pulled up out of the water and is pressed against

A hard chest, a warm body

She is being cradled

Safe, protected

She feels safe, feels safe

The man trips, on a log

His shin ignites with pain

But he can only focus on the girl

He doesn't know who she is but he knows

He has to have her, she belongs with him.

They fall hitting the hard ground

Together, together

She opens her eyes for the first time since jumping

Her crystal blue ones meet his smoldering grey ones

Her hand reaches out

She doesn't know why

She caresses his face

Her freezing hand is heated by his burning skin

His lips capture hers

Hot meets cold,

The lost is found

Their souls entwine in the night

Bringing the stars out from hiding

Revealing the moon

Dripping with pale light

They locked eyes once again

Tanned skin, on pale skin

Then it all comes back

Like a film in their minds

Flashes of each other

Holding hands, stolen kisses

Laughter in the rain

On the run together

They remember

They found each other

They don't know how

They don't know why they know they are soul mates

But with every bone in her wild body

But with every vein in his passionate soul

They know they found their home alas

"Demetri" she whispered, she whispered

"Eva" he said, he said

Together again

The star crossed lovers

Live on

The silence breaks, the howl returns

Together they run into the night

Hand in, hand

Soul in soul

They run, they run

Off they go into

Their own dysfunctional forever.

Maskedthoughts
This is a short story with a poetic format. All the italicized sections, symbolize the wind saying those lines. This is my first time doing anything like this, so any feed back would be great!

this is such a captivating piece because i felt panicked when your character did, and i felt at peace when your character did. this is wonderfully interesting because i had no real back-story and got to think of one on my own. i sort of have a piece like this that i'm thinking for posting, definitely not as poetic, but maybe you can read it tomorrow and see?

I like the darkness in this one. It is a story in a way, but it still acts like a poem, which is great. Thanks for sharing
