Post-Titled Poem # 2A Poem by Mark PearceMore letters than necessary. Fewer words than needed.
Post Titled Poem # 2

From the opening, you’d never guess
The winding, cavernous space within.
The team assembled
Projecting a strange aura – of confidence, fear and excitement.
Going where few have gone before.
Damp and dank and creepy,
With only one light,
The team of explorers communicate
As if they have done this a thousand times before.
Peeking around each other –
Squinting into the darkness.
Few words spoken
As the solitary light probes nook shadows
Moisture.
Strange formations.
Tight spaces.
Then a rumble. Near sub-audible
From somewhere deep within.
The explorers look at each other.
Slightly surprised
But not scared.
No. Not scared at all.
Just slightly amused.
Perhaps they’re familiar with the source of the ghostly wail.
Perhaps it will not bring down
Millions of tons of earthly wrath upon them.
Perhaps not.
But there is danger.
Someone could be sentenced to death here.
It could happen even to the most innocent among us.
As the journey ends
Someone comes to.
The adventure, seeming nothing but a dream.
