Love Flies On

Love Flies On

Inspired by a flight

Love Flies On

My love flies on
To Chicago.

I remember the first day
On a flight from Houston.
She was efficient and proper
With wonderful eyes.

She served each passenger
With warmth and kindness.
But in truth,
She was there only for me.

I disembarked in Denver,
But there was no leaving
In the fullest sense of the word.

A chance meeting
Another time
And we were no longer
Apart.

Abundant years have
Overflowed the memory.
Cherished moments
Both serious and silly.

It was life in a clean suburbia,
Pleasantly settled,
And yet, with a void
I could not fill.

Through all the kids and work –
The grand fulfillments –
Grounded in love
She missed the sky.

Which is why today
I stand alone –
A brisk wind blowing
East northeast.

A few words spoken.
Container opened.
The urn I toss
To the sky.

Into the blue,
Reborn and new,
My love flies on
To Chicago.

This one is heartbreaking, Mark: the thought of loving someone down all those years, her longing to fly and then the finality of ashes in the wind. If I'm reading this incorrectly, please correct me. My heart goes out to the speaker, even if he is an amalgym of people you've known. This is a fine piece of work. The tone is just right, explanatory without being either cold or overly sentimental. This one bears reading again and again for its simplicity and stern beauty.

I cannot get over the lines "Grounded in love She missed the sky."

I think many people can relate to this, I know I can.

The ending was moving. Beautiful.

Awh. What a wonderful poem. It's tribute allows the mind to wander aimlessly. Great Job on this one.
