"

Let it flow, then find where you are.

Green.
Green captures my vision.
Flowing away from me.
Alive and vibrant.  Reaching.  Growing.
Pulling nutrients from the earth and sky
And giving them expression.

Blue.
Blue sky above me.  Peaceful and calm,
Where clouds occlude, but only slightly.
Wisps.  Maybe clouds.  Maybe smoke.
Perhaps a fire frames my vision.

And there’s sound.
Sharp sound.  Thundering sound.  Chaos.
But it’s around me.  And above me.
And it doesn’t involve me.  Anymore.

Blades of grass, a stone and small sticks crease my cheek.
My arms and legs are with me, though I can’t feel them.
Green and blue fade, from the edges.
To gray.  Then black.
And a darkness captures my vision.

Anyone who has been to Gettysburg recognizes themselves in this. Standing in the tower above the battlefield, who hasn't mentally taken the place of one of those young men who lay there, imagined conciousness "flowing away" with the green of the field? This is a beautifully realized vision of one of those many, many moments. And not just "darkness captures my vision" but "a darkness..." - just that one perfectly selected word truly makes the picture whole.

I had sort of an "aw, s**t" kind of moment. Struck silent by the post-title. Sometimes i get frustrated to find the popular words in nearly every work I read. It is a happy circumstance to find a wonderful word like "occlude".

The grass and trees remember. And sometimes if we are silent and know how to listen they whisper their secrets. Powerful, amazing work.
