Sakeena

Sakeena

A Poem by Maryam

On the pavement was where we sat
I held her hand, cold as ice
But her warmth radiated into my being
And finally, she uttered the words
'I'm just like you, really I am'
Taking a final drag of her cigarette
I promptly said, 'Yes you are, really you are'
Now tears overwhelmed her eyes
She whispered, 'Have mercy on me, I'm only human'
Whilst I remained silent
At war with her demons
I felt the passion, and I felt the fear
'This world is not where I belong'
'I shall cast you into hell, but you can't take me with you'
'Trust me Sakeena, I am a good person'
Her tears now splashing onto my hand
I felt every ounce of emotion, in every drop
Again I said, 'Yes you are, you really are'
She'd stopped crying now, and instead began to smile
As if something valuable had been returned to her
As if some miracle had taken place before her
Seconds later I was enveloped in her embrace
'Let's go from here to where we belong. Come with me'
