I Have No Heart

I Have No Heart

A Poem by Benedict Mdluli

Moving in the dark silently, four steps like a knight.

I can hear the sound of voices screaming at night.

The World is a beast; it feeds on its best meal.

Raping children and killing women as if it’s nothing.

I’m rolling in the deep; my heart is enclosed in a pit,

My body feels and can’t take the heat, we have all

been turned into cheats.

I see the guilty die crying out “We are not guilty”,

While the innocent die crying out for pity. How

Sarcastic, life is like a plastic thrown into fire.

Nobody really cares they take your life sip it away

With a glass of whisky, to soothe their souls from

Their sins, but they are never cleansed.

I watch, I see, I do nothing I blame myself surely

I have no heart. Yes it has been hurt, consoled and

Hurt again, I don’t forget the pain. I try to love again

But I still have nothing left to gain well it’s against the

grain beyond the capacity of the brain.

I may not understand but I’m protected by divine

power from above. Stab me but never expect blood.

And I’m not going to die but the opposite will happen

You are going to cry and run to the shrine.
