Chapter 7

Chapter 7

A Chapter by Molento

Molento and Eliena ran through the village, while everyone was blinded by the flare. "Quickly, quickly, they won't be distracted for long," Molento urged Eliena.

"There they are," a voice shouted out behind them.

"Urg, I was hoping that they would stay blinded for just a little bit longer," Molento cursed, "This is not how I was hoping to spend my day."

"How were you hoping to spend your day," Eliena gasped.

"On foot," Molento replied in an exasperated tone.

"But we are on foo-" Eliena started to say, but she stopped once Molento grabbed her and launched them into the air, opening his wings. "And now we're not," Eliena sighed, "You know, this is rather uncomfortable."

"I'm sorry, but it's the only way to get away quick enough, and we're not taking any chances, we're going to keep going as long as I can."

"Okay, okay, I know we need to get away fast enough that they can't catch us on foot again. Oh, and where are we going to go, I didn't have any luck in getting directions."

            "Fortunately, I did."

"Oh, okay then," Eliena prompted, hoping to get more information.

"From the town, we go east three days on foot, then turn north for a day and we'll come across the elven border town."

"What about anything past that, I don't expect a town like that to have a good teacher of magic."

"That's as far as the directions go, apparently no human has been to the major elven cities since the time that this country was under elven control."

Molento flew for several hours more, reaching the town that they had stayed at the previous night.

"We shouldn't stop in town this time, it's too easy to locate someone who has is in the town. We should camp out in the outskirts of the town."

"Agreed, I do not want to go back again for a long time," Eliena said bitterly.

"Whoa, are you really that angry at your dad for kidnapping you?"

"Yes I am, this was my choice and he had no right to think that I would want to go back.

Molento landed in a clearing on the eastern side of the town, only a few hundred yards away from the town limits.

"Man, my wings are sore," Molento groaned, rubbing his shoulder, "I don't think I ever carried another person that far before." Molento sat down, wings still extended, and groaned again. "If we ever have to move fast, we'll need a better way that me carrying you," he mused, "If only there was a way..." Molento trailed off, staring at a point in the ground in front of him. If only I could remember more, he thought, I'm sure that if I had all of the knowledge that I had before I lost my memory, I would have a solution to this problem.

Eliena, meanwhile, had decided that she should not bother Molento, and let him rest for awhile. He's done so much for me, and all I've been is a nuisance. She started a fire and got out the provisions that she had picked up in the town.

What about meditation? Molento thought suddenly, if I meditate I might be able to find the answers in my own head. So, Molento started to meditate. After about an hour, Elliena wondered if she should bother Molento, because neither of them had eaten all day, and Molento had carried her the entire day. Just as she was about to say his name, Molento's eyes flew open. "I've got it! I know how to let us move faster!"

            "Really? What's your solution?"

"While meditating, a memory resurfaced, almost as if it was planned, the solution to the problem at just the right moment, it didn't even take a minute!"

"Um, Molento, you were in a trance for the past hour."

            "What! That long, huh?"

            "Yup."

"Wow. Anyway, the solution. The memory was a spell, a single spell, that gives wings like mine to people."

            "That would mean..."

"We would go much faster, and I won't have to carry you."

"That sounds good, but I get the feeling that there's a catch."

            "Well..."

            "Yes?"

"It causes excruciating pain at the moment that the wings grow. It's caused by the rapid growth of new muscle, skin, and bones."

            "How long does it last?"

"Not long, only a moment or too."

            "Let's do it"

"Not even going to consider it for a minute?"

"Nope, I've always dreamed of flying, and now I can."

Molento walked behind Eliena and cut slits in her shirt.

            “What are you doing?”

“Well, the wings need to go somewhere.”

            “Oh, right.”

"Ok, then, hold still, this spell is rather long. Huic praestare persona digna penas eorum instinctus naturales volans!"

With a loud crack, black, bat-like wings similar to Molento's, only slightly smaller, erupted out of Eliena's back.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!" Eliena wailed. "That hurt," she sobbed, large, round tears rolling down her face and falling to the ground, "but it's over now."

"So, how do you like the wings?"

"It feels weird, like a new arm or leg would feel."

"Well of course, it's basically the same thing," Molento said, "Oh, and the spell also implanted flying instincts in your brain, so that you will be able to fly more easily."

"Implanted into my brain, are you sure that's safe?"

"Well, I was pretty sure," Molento admitted, "but I wasn't positive that it wouldn't do anything."

            "What!"

            "Well, no harm done, right?"

"Yeah, that's true, I guess. I want to try them out now."

"That might not be the best idea," Molento warned, "they are probably still sore and weak, but they should be fine in the morning."

"Okay, fine," Eliena said, dissapointed, "let's turn in now, we have a very long day ahead of us."

Eliena unrolled one of the blankets and laid down on her side. "G'night," she said, and fell asleep, wings still extended, lying flat on the ground.

"Goodnight," Molento said, sighing. He sat down against a tree stump and looked up at the night sky. In no time at all, he fell asleep.
