The Avid PoetessA Poem by Poet PittinixThis composition addresses the views of a poetess.A writer describes herself as an avid
poetess. She told a poet that some of his compositions were not poems. According to her, they are short
stories. If she is an avid poetess, she should
know more about poetry. Perhaps she has her own definition of
poetry. Any form of writing or speech can be
poetry. It depends on how you read a
composition. A poem should be read with rhythm and
style. It seems that the poetess has not
heard about conscious poetry. In Jamaica, we invented dub poetry. Let us talk about story poems and
songs that tell a story. Most if not all poems tell a story. Many songs of various genres also
tell a story. Some singers turn poems into songs. So all writings can be regarded as
stories. Authors do not need rules for writing
poetry. We do not have to follow the opinions
of traditionalists. Every author has his or her own style
of writing. Who decides how poetry should be written? The bottom line is nobody has the
right to make rules for poetry. © 2024 Poet PittinixAuthor's Note
