Poetry Contests

This poem challenges the way some members of websites host poetry contests.

Some poetry contests have distasteful and uninteresting titles.

Poets should encourage others to write uplifting poems.

Many authors and critics do not have a sense of good writing.

Sometimes the judges unfairly judge the poetry contests.

All entries should be given the same opportunity to win.

 

Some members of websites form online friendships and cliques.

They promote favouritism and ignore the work of other poets.

When the host of a contest requests a public vote,

The members of the cliques vote for each other’s entries.

As a result, the best compositions do not usually win the prizes.

I didn't realize there were even really contests still being run. It's a little sad to hear that they've gotten this bad, because I remember enjoying participating back in the day and when you got to legitimately win one, it was a nice feeling. I'm sorry to know that it's being used to exclude people. I also thought contests were a great way to see a wide variety of writing from different people if you hosted one. I guess that could be a solution, is host your own contest. It does take a bit of time, but it might be worth it.
