Miss Nelson

This is a short story about an old woman and a drunkard.

      Miss Nelson was an old widow who resided alone in a small house by the sea in Port Henderson. She was a peaceful and quiet person. Moreover, she did not have many friends, and she kept to herself most of the times. Her next-door neighbour had a bar at the front of his yard, and at nights, the loud music and the noisy drunkards caused a disturbance. The noise affected Miss Nelson, but she did not say anything about it to the owner of the bar.

      A particular old man who was a regular customer at the bar used to bother Miss Nelson. On weekends, he would go to her yard when he is drunk and repeatedly call out her name loudly. Moreover, he would curse her if she does not answer him. Miss Nelson could not bear the taunts anymore, so she decide to take physical action against the annoying old man. She urinated in a pail each day for seven consecutive days, and she covered it and kept it on her verandah.

      One night the drunken old man staggered into Miss Nelson’s yard and shouted out her name many times. She did not respond, so he proceeded to curse and insult her. Moreover, he spoke indecent language, and he made derogatory remarks about her, but she remained calm. The old man was standing in the dark when Miss Nelson crept out of the front room. He could not see her, so he was still cursing.

      She picked up the pail and quickly threw the foul-smelling urine in his face. Some of it went in his mouth because he was speaking, and he started to spit. Silence suddenly filled the yard. He did not know what the substance was, so he said, “You threw stinking water on me.” Miss Nelson giggled. “He-he, I wet him with the piss,” she said. The old b*****d did not say another word, he left the premises in humiliation, and he did not set foot in Miss Nelson’s yard again.
