GlowA Poem by Mark HendersonA reflective poem that considers the confusion many of us experience in life, with a deep emphasis on our individuality, however, it encourages us to recognise this and become more.Faces once lit by fire, now reflect lights from a screen, while our hearts scream out for relationship, it’s much less welcome and received. Where once we dreamed of gold, romance, treasure and love, our obsessions have changed as we now dream only of us. I has become our deepest desire, and we will fight for it no matter the cause yet, our souls bleed longing for something more. Heroes ancient and brand new find themselves forgotten and ignored. Where are the old gods, kings, queens and warriors? They are not I, so why should we care? We are now our own obsession, our desire, I am my god. Forgive us our trespasses, our sins and our vanity, we pray into mirrors, phones and screens. I am okay, I am right, I am fine please remind me of this whenever you can. No more do our minds consider or desire, they are reprogrammed to believe in and support only us. Be careful of dreams, be careful of love, because distractions like those detract from I. And, without I, how can I believe in I or myself? How can I be sure I am first, number one? In time, screens will die, no longer lighting our faces. I pray we’ll remember there is more we should know. Because I is not all, I is selfish, short and low. We should dream of desire, love, hope, even treasure and gold, romance and intrigue, forgiveness and grace, these are what should reflect in our faces. Let’s relight some fires, and recapture our glow.
