Teddy in the Dump

Teddy in the Dump

A Poem by Mark Wallace

Lonely teddy in the dump

With eyes downcast and body slumped

Cast in a purgatory drear,

Was there no child to shed a tear?

A loyal teddy, I doubt not

That once gave joy but is forgot

Now on a disused fridge you perch

Your beady eye betrays your hurt.

Alas, most melancholy sight

As day turns into bitter night

And, you, ill-clad against the cold

Still sit, and wear the smile of old.

But though you smile, your heart doth break

A bear forgotten and forsaked

A bear betrayed by fickle man

Who cast him out without a qualm.

To make the man, the child must die

And childish feelings all run dry

And he who would traverse life’s humps

Must cast his teddy in the dump.

Poor Teddy--he really got a raw deal. Having aquired all the "growing up" I care for, I wouldn't mind going backwards for a while, and if that was possible, I'd gladly take ol' Teddy back.
