Daymares

Daymares

A Chapter by Mark Martindale

Images shot through his head like bullets in a warzone. The dark woods, hidden by the shadows, not a signal chirp or peep to be heard. This was the dreadful day he lost his beloved girlfriend to the cold hands of death. The sight of her head in his lap, her long black hair brushed to the side of her face, and emerald green eyes looking deeply into his as blood pooled under them both made him want to look away, but he couldn’t. Her pale hand layed upon his cheek shaking and his eyes were blurred by a river of tears as her last words came to him. “Gwintar, my love. I don’t want this to ruin the rest of your life. We are so young, and you have a long life ahead of you. Please my love, don’t dwell on me. I want you to find another girl and honor me by loving her as much as you love me. She’s not allowed to be as beautiful as me though.” She let out a weak laugh and her body tightened up with pain.
Gwintar could feel the warmth of life slowly leaving her hand. Becoming cold, almost freezing. The chill from her touch ran through his spine quickly, making him shiver. He held her closer to his body, hoping it would bring the warmth back into hers. But it didn’t. Gwintar put his hand over her’s and kissed her lips softly. “Please Scarlet,” he begged, choking on his words, “Don’t leave me. You’re the love of my life and I can’t go on without you. Never have I loved someone as much as I love you. You’re everything to me. I love you.” Never had the thought crossed his head that he would be saying those words to keep her alive. Death seemed too surreal. But there was no way to deny that his beloved Scarlet was in his arms dying.
Scarlet’s hand was now numb and unmoving as her eyes gently fluttered shut. A soft, faint, murmur coming from her lips caused him to lean in closer to hear her more clearly. “Vivere felicemente il mio amore,” she smiled and kissed his cheek, “Live happily my love” It was saying in Italian they used to make each other smile and dream of their future together. It was also promise they made to each other when they first met so that neither of them ever regretted anything they did with each other. And was also a dream they had of helping their favorite animal, the Italian Wolf.
He held her tighter, now completely blinded by tears. “Save your strength Scar. Please,” Gwintar could hardly speak, if at all, “I will Scar. I will live happily just for you. I promise.” With one last “I love you”, Scarlet’s body exerted the dark, haunting feeling of lifelessness. With his eyes closed, and his face buried in her shoulder, he whispered to her, “Vivere felicemente il mio amore.”
