The words I know so well

The words I know so well

A Poem by Mark D

My tears ran cold
As monsters crawled up my leg
And tongued upon my knee
I started to fumble
Over the words I know so well

I embark upon the last long walk
And unfold my white flag
My coffin will have beautiful wood
To make them wonder who’s beauty lies within

My flag will be presented to my son before I go
But what will I say
To cool his aching heart?
And allow him at will
To bring me back to life?

Remember these words
In a life rich in mistakes
They are all I have learned
“You are as you decide to be”

I miss your words Mark, this is a remarkable poem. The last stanza is in particular very rich with meaning to me. In fact the tone of the last two stanzas is so interesting from a psychological perspective....

You are a poet, those last four lines say it all.

This poem is wonderful - them last seven words are very meaningful and so very true...

A sad, dark poem, so many thoughts, all placed in fine style. Undoubtedly best exposed if factual, if not an empathic piece for the fathers who surely must think and feel that way. Sweetness and love in those last few words - and what wonderful advice.

again, your intimation, wrapped in beguiling analogy, leads the mind to despondent horizons ..... suns setting into a sizzling sea, putting out the lights.

this reads as a well-thought-out eventuality, bringing tears to my eyes. a conceived scenario of a father half a world away from his family; one bereft of hope, well schooled in the injustices of the world. a profound legacy he leaves his son. brilliantly and quietly eternal.

such words, mark.

Wonderful poem. There is much strength in the words you choose to give the readers. The love you present for your son gives me the feeling of that ache if he were to lose you. My hope is that he doesn't anytime soon. A well written piece.
